Stories From Haunted Mumbai!

When we think about holidays with friends, we often end up reminiscing the nights where everyone stayed up just to tell stories of ghosts. While the world might be divided into believers and non-believers of the paranormal, ghost stories on a silent, dark night in the woods never fails to send a good chill down any spine. These stories sometimes make us believe that the paranormal activities happen only on silent and unpopulated grounds. But, such experiences can happen even in the middle of a chaotic, bustling city like Mumbai.

We give you a list of places in the city where there have been numerous encounters with residents and passersby alike that would make sceptics believe, and believers repeatedly chant the verses for protection against the paranormal.

1. Aarey Colony: The road that passes through the dense forest area is quite a beauty in the day. With temperature lower than the outside city and a canopy of trees providing cool shade, the place is a haven for nature lovers in the mornings. However, the same place can turn into a nightmare after sundown. Vehicles that pass from here in the night have reported sightings of a child, old man, woman in a white saree and sometimes a mother and child walking on the side of the road and disappearing into thin air. People avoid driving from the area late in the night because of another reason – there are experiences people have narrated of an old lady making the rounds of this road and begins chasing cars until they are out of the road.

2. Nasserwanj Wadi : Barely a ten-minute walk from Mahim Station, this place is considered to be one of the most haunted and scary places in the city. The residents usually warn people who do not know the area to not go inside the campus as they might end up getting in harm’s way, or even worse, getting possessed.
A Parsi man called Nasser owned the land and it is said that one day, he was brutally murdered by someone by being locked in a cabin and set ablaze alive. It has been more than 20 years to this incident, but the fear that people have in their minds has only increased with time. Reportedly after the murder of the Parsi owner of this compound, there have been seven other deaths in the vicinity. The well inside the compound has been covered by the residents around but there has been no difference and allegedly Nasser’s spirit still walks around the compound at night, tormenting trespassers.

3. Grand Paradi Towers: The towers are smack in the middle of South Mumbai, in the posh locality of Kemps Corner. The towers have earned quite a reputation by having most of its residents commit suicide by jumping off the building. The cause of this is unknown, but more than a paranormal activity, the building is said to have a jinxed energy or a curse that creates incidents of suicide in the building complex.

4. Ghodbunder Road: The classic Bollywood ghost seems to have made its way onto the Ghodbunder Road that connects Thane to the suburbs of Mumbai. Witnesses claim that past midnight, there is a beautiful woman who stands on the sidewalk and asks for a lift. A witness who wished not to be named said that while passing by the road, a lady stood on the side asking for a lift, but the witness and his friend zoomed ahead on the bike. After only a few moments, realising that the girl might be genuinely stranded, they went back to the spot to see if the lady really needed help, only to find an empty and deserted street.

5. Mukesh Mills: One of the few remaining mills that still exist in the city, but is not visited by anyone. The old machines and equipment that were used once upon a time by the mill workers are still there gathering dust. After the mills shut down, this place was a hideout for gangsters and a battleground during the gang wars. The whole place emits a creepy feeling as there must have been numerous deaths inside with the spirits still haunting the place.
Many actors such as Bipasha Basu and Varun Dhawan have been reluctant to shoot here as there have been incidents which scared them. One of them was with actress Kamya Punjabi. While shooting for a TV soap, she reported to have lost her belongings and also having her car break down in the compound. Reportedly, someone on the sets also got possessed, after which the shooting was stopped.

6. Devchhaya building ka Kua, Goregaon West: The well looks like an ordinary well from the outside, but the residents claim otherwise. The weird thing about this well is that it is covered, but still, nobody dares to go near it on a normal day. Residents say that the well is ancient, and is used for immersion of idols on festivals and is well lit during all celebrations. However, the well seems to have claimed many lives and people who approach it have said that they feel “pulled inside by a force” even though they are far enough from the place and even when it is covered. Nobody knows the reason behind this. The well becomes normal during festive days but seems to turn evil otherwise. Residents say that there is police protection near the well at all times.

7. SNDT Girl’s college, Santacruz: The SNDT college has a sprawling campus in Santacruz that has thousands of girls studying in the University. In the night, however, the residents living around have claimed that in one particular classroom of a building in the campus lights up. They hear the voice of a teacher lecturing students on mathematics and after some time, she starts yelling at the students who scream and wail in the classroom. While some residents have made an effort to investigate, they found the particular classroom empty and quiet, but later the noises returned once they were out of there and continued till morning.

8. Marve-Madh island road: The spirit sightings here have been reported by not only the passersby but also the late night shift workers in the hotels in the vicinity. The road from Marve to Madh has had many drivers take sharp turns as they saw a beautiful bride on the road screaming and wailing. It is said that a bride was killed here on her wedding night and her body disposed of in the bushes around. They say that if you do not hit the accelarator if you see her, she will chase you at inhuman speed till the end of the road.

9. The last bus from Film City to Dindoshi (Goregaon): It is said that in the last bus, sometime post-midnight, a woman in white clothing comes and sits on the bus from one of the stops, and gets off the bus mid-route; when it is at full speed. The conductor also reportedly asks the passengers travelling then to come to the seats ahead and settle as the woman has a specifically preferred seat. It is said that the lady was killed on the route that the bus travels in and her body never found.
